Travis County Precinct 3 Commissioner Karen Huber was sworn in this weekend before a standing-room only collection of supporters and friends at Star Hill Ranch in Bee Cave.
“There is no way I could say thank you enough to the people I know, and the people I don’t know, for making this possible,” Huber said.
Two years ago, she said she believed she was just part of a group of people looking for someone to run in the upcoming election.
“Then they all started pointing fingers at me,” she laughed.
She said she intends to represent, to the best of her ability, the majority of opinions in Precinct 3 and that she hopes to expand county power while bringing transparency to her office.
“This is a bipartisan group we have here. We needed leadership to deal with issues that cut across party lines,” she said.
Travis County Judge Orlinda Naranjo issued Huber’s oath of office in front of a huge audience of supporters, friends and other politicians. Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton, Precinct Three Justice of the Peace Susan Steeg, Precinct Three Constable Richard McCain, Precinct Five Constable Bruce Elfant, former State Representative Ann Kitchen, and District 47 State Representative Valinda Bolton all came out to show their support for Huber.
“It brings tears to my eyes and I don’t cry easily,” Huber said of the outpouring of support at the celebration.
Huber officially started her new job Monday morning and said she had a packed day of debriefing before commissioners court opened Tuesday morning.
“It’s exciting because it’s what I really wanted to do… It’s what managed to get me through. The campaigning is not something I particularly enjoy,” Huber said.
The first issue she intends to tackle is the land-use authority bills that are coming before the legislature.
Newly reelected State Rep. Valinda Bolton was equally eager to get started.
“We have a lot of work to do, made more complicated by economic concerns,” said Bolton, who will be sworn in with the rest of the legislature Jan. 13. “I’m so ready. It will have been a little more than two months. We’ve all had time to rest, to get our staffs together, to do the holidays, and now it’s ‘let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!’”

This area is the place to watch for stories about Karen and the 2012 campaign. We will begin populating it with current material as soon as the media begins its coverage of the campaign and the issues at stake.
