Karen Sworn in as Precinct Three Commissioner!

Dear Supporters:

Almost a year ago, I began the process that was to lead to my decision to run for the office of Travis County Commissioner for Precinct 3. After much thought and discussion, that process boiled down to this: If we were going to protect our quality of life in Precinct 3 from unrestrained development and irresponsible growth, someone needed to replace the incumbent commissioner.

Karen on stumpThe bell was tolling for someone to step up to fight for this fantastic part of the world and, after a lot of soul-searching, I had to accept that it was tolling for me. It was tolling for me because of my educational and professional background, because of my understanding of the issues facing our region, and because of my prior activism in fighting for new laws and new plans to help preserve our beautiful hill country experience.

The problem was that, as much experience I had with the issues, I had zero experience in running for a public office. As a first-time candidate, I had no idea the extent of resources it would take to achieve a win over an entrenched incumbent. Many of you did have this knowledge, however, and, beginning before the Democratic Primary, you have continued to pull us through--whenever I called on you to provide the support and guidance needed to achieve this victory.

Karen smilingI am especially grateful to my inner circle of advisors and my staff: They were the ones who really made this happen. I'm going to resort to the old dodge that "you all know who you are", because it is really true that if I start, I won't know where to stop, since there are so many of you who have helped this effort in special ways. Of course, there are also all of you who helped me connect to your communities all across Precinct 3 by hosting "meet and greet" events and still others who stood beside me through the tough process of fundraising.

Importantly and very sincerely, I'd like to thank my opponent, Gerald Daugherty, for the straightforward and courteous campaign that he ran. Other races have experienced the expected "mud slinging" with little or no attention to the issues before us. Gerald did not do that and I'm proud of us both for sticking to the issues in this important contest.

Karen Meet & GreetFinally, I want all of you who supported me and voted for me--and all of those who didn't--to know that the result of this election is that you will have an enthusiastic commissioner representing your interests as individuals and the interests of the central Texas environment in which we all live. We all know that we have a lot of work ahead of us to get Precinct 3 and central Texas back on the right track to ensure our quality of life and future economic vitality. Let's get started!

ParadeI'll work hard for you; I promise you that. But it will take all of us, pulling together, to make this turnaround a reality. I know we can do it, and I am counting on you to believe in our future along with me. So, get ready!

After the first of the year, you'll be hearing from me again as we gear up to accomplish the work we've promised to do!

But for now, give yourself a big pat on the back for a job well done; and again-- Thank You! for everything you have made happen!
